Jen’s Story.
I was born in a country town of Dubbo in Australia and the youngest of 6. I always had a fascination for babies. I am now the mother of three beautiful children.
After becoming an enrolled nurse, I undertook further training to become a mothercraft nurse. I worked at both Karitane and Tresillian in Sydney. Inspired to continue working in this field and enrich my learning, I ventured abroad working extensively through the UK, Europe and America. During this time, I worked as an in-home maternity nurse, supporting, assisting and educating new parents in newborn care, breast and bottle feeding, sleep, settling and and establishing healthy workable routines.
My youngest son that was born in 2011 is my miracle baby and educated me on the importance of sleep, even when I thought I knew it all!
Saxon was born with a micro-deletion of chromosome 16, the development chromosome. His specialist told us he would be severely developmentally delayed, most possibly autistic as well as other health issues. Our worlds were shattered thinking our baby wasn’t going to develop into a normal healthy boy. My maternal instincts completely took over and the minute he was born I got to work researching babies brain development and putting all of my knowledge into practice. I made it a priority to guide Saxon into a solid sleeping routine from the very start and help him to gain the most amount of sleep he possibly could. This, along with many hours of early intervention was all I could do to give him the best possible chance. At 15 months all the specialists involved with Saxon were completely amazed at his progress. At the age of 10wks he showed signs of severe brain damage, at 6 months they were happy with his progress but had big concerns regarding his ongoing development and at 15mths...This!
Our Paediatric Neurologist quoted, “Saxon has made considerable progress since I last saw him at 8 months. At that time, I would not have predicted that he would be functioning as well as he is today.” When babies have rested sleep, their brains heal and six years on Saxon is all the proof I need to know that this is 100% true! He is now a happy and healthy boy and is learning at a normal rate. I believe that things could’ve been so different for Saxon if his brain wasn’t able to have deep rested sleep.
Who knew that this life experience would have set my life’s work
